Behind The Firm List Blog
Work Work Work
There's been a lot of flux in my life recently, mostly around the work/career part
recently. That has me likely moving soon, starting a new job or getting out there and
trolling for more contract work. I know that there's gonna be a point soon where I run
out of time again and/or flexibility. So I'm trying to make a superhuman dash to do
as much work on this site while I still can. Probably pushing myself a little too hard,
but, oh well. You guys don't pay me nothing for nothing.
April was a slow month, in terms of adding firms. It was The Firm List's 6th Birthday
and perhaps I was partying too hard. Nawh, but I didn't feel much like spending time
on the site, so other than Full Member firms, I didn't add to many firms. I think
that was a record for the fewest number of firms added in a month. Oh well.
So this month, I'm like a bat out of hell (sorry Meatloaf) already. In the first 8
days of the month I've added 451 firms. The previous one month record was 534 in
May 2002. I think I can take it. I'm on pace for about 1,000 I think.
And I guess that's a good thing, as I had quite a queue of firms to be added. It was
up at around 1,400 at the beginning of this month, a record. As of just now, it's down
to 869 firms. I'm up through November 7, 2003. Whew!
But it has me thinking I might have a new problem. What if I catch up all the way? Will
it be possible to sustain? Would I want to? I mean, I don't get a lot of firms
upgrading to Full Member status, but many of those who do I am sure are doing it to
shorten that 7-8 month lag before being added. If that's reduced back to a week or
even a couple days (as it once was), what incentive is there?
People will be back to expecting everything for free. Wait, 99% of people will be
back to expecting everything for free. Up from the current 97%.
Man oh man. If even 5-10% of firms decided what I do with this site was worth $50,
I'd be rolling in some money. Might even match a decent hourly wage for the work I've
put in. (A 30 day stretch between mid-March and mid-April saw me put in 102-1/2 hours.
So what, 25 hours a week.) This is a part-time, unpaid job. What, an internship?
Oh well, if I didn't want to do it, I could just stop. If I get sick of it, I'll
just stop supporting this site. Ah, that'll be the life.
